Review: Hex Hall #1
Title: Hex Hall
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Summary:
Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect. As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her
Review:
So, when I was walking through the library the other day, I saw the third book in this series, and thought, I should probably read them already (since I have a friend who has told me I should for so long). Went back and got all three books.
I wasn’t too sure what to expect, other than it was about a girl who went to school with faeries, witches and shifters… but it was pretty good.
The story is about this girl, Sophie, who has known she was a witch since she was 12 years old, but lives with her human mother. Her father, a powerful warlock, has never really been in her life except via a few emails. (lame)
Then she is sent to this school for Prodigium (monsters) that have risked exposure and need to be taught how to be more discreet.
She makes some enemies (of course, the popular girls) crushes on a guy, and gets to learn more about who she is and what she can do.
The characters were pretty real, but I didn’t really feel like they were special. The plot was good, and there were even some good twists at the end.
It was a very quick read. But maybe because I just read Obsidian and Onyx, Im kinda immune to OKAY books (since those were so freakin awesome)
But this one was good… just not super great.
Rating: 3.5 Stars
The direction of the love story disappointed me. Overall the series wasn't bad though.
